Meitheal Announces Formation and Welcomes New Singers

Meitheal, the new chamber choir from Unhinged, is now forming in Galway and welcoming singers. Under the artistic direction of Oran Tobin, the choir will create exceptional unaccompanied choral music rooted in place, community, and imagination. Open to singers aged eighteen and over, with no experience required. Get in touch at hello@unhinged.ie.

The Meaning of the Name

Meitheal is an Irish word for neighbours coming together to help one another with work that benefits the whole community. Harvesting crops, building homes, supporting families during busy seasons.

The choir takes its name from that tradition of shared effort.

Every performance is a collective act. Singers, audience, composers, volunteers, and community partners all contribute to creating something that belongs to everyone.

Just as a traditional meitheal gathered around the work of the land, this ensemble gathers around the shared work of music.
